Los Angeles P.D. officers Roger Murtaugh and Martin Riggs are back, and this time they are chasing a thug in a red BMW. When the car crashes, several million dollars in Krugerrands - South African currency - spill out of the trunk. After Murtaugh is ambushed in his home by a group of South African thugs, they speculate that the vehicle they were chasing may be linked. When their captain assigns them to guard a witness in a drug case, they soon find out that the drug dealers the witness was dealing with are South African diplomats hiding behind their immunity to carry out cocaine smuggling. Riggs also discovers that one of the consulate employees is in fact the murderer of his wife! After the thugs kill a consul secretary Riggs was in love with, and several fellow police officers are murdered by the diplomats, Riggs & Murtaugh exact angry, bloody revenge against the psychopathic drug-dealing diplomats… Los Angeles police sergeant Roger Murtaugh and his partner, Sergeant Martin Riggs, are working on yet another drug-related case. Soon after finding one million dollars worth of South African Krugerrands in a crashed red BMW after a chase, Riggs and Murtaugh are assigned to keep an eye on Leo Getz, who is scheduled to testify in a case. There are people who don't want Leo to testify: a group of drug smugglers led by Arjen Rudd, the minister of diplomatic affairs for the South African consulate. Rudd turns out to be the man that Riggs and Murtaugh are after in the drug case they were working on before Leo was placed in their protective custody, which doesn't look very protective when Leo is kidnapped by Rudd's right hand man Pieter Vorstedt. Riggs ends up falling for Rudd's secretary Rika Van Den Haas, who doesn't like Rudd. In a confrontation with Vorstedt, Riggs is told the true circumstances behind the death of his wife Vicky, who died in a car crash in 1984: the car crash was caused by Vorstedt, who was supposed to have killed Riggs. Minutes after Vorstedt tries to kill Riggs, Riggs finds Rika dead, and this sends Riggs over the edge. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover return in a rare sequel that's just about as good as the first. Everything's new; it's not just a rehash. <br/><br/>In the movie, to find the bad guy they have to get help of a man named Leo Getz. He's played by by Joe Pesci who is the new addition the movie. He's an accountant who has figured out a foolproof way to launder vast quantities of illegal drug money. He's very funny and is great to watch in every scene he is in.<br/><br/>What Riggs and Murtaugh stumble over is a complex plot, never quite explained, by which South African diplomats are dealing illegally in gold and other contraband. It is unclear exactly what their plan is, but they are ruthless in its execution. <br/><br/>The action has Murtaugh in the bathroom about to sit up when he finds out if he does a bomb will go off. That scene has Gibson and Glover with their most chemistry. It's pretty funny and dramatic. Also Gibson's trailer being shot up by a helicopter as he escapes is cool. And some pretty good chase sequences.<br/><br/>Richard Donner returns as director as he will do in further installments. The only thing I miss is the Mel Gibson being suicidal. I know he really can't be but it was a pretty interesting thing in the first. And for a period of time in the middle Danny Glover is no where to be found and it focuses on Gibson's character. But in all this is darker than the first and with the introduction of Leo Getz this is a really good movie.<br/><br/>3 1/2 stars (out of 4) This movie is filled with tons of action. Crime-fighting, shooting, it has it all. The acting is great, and keeps you paying attention the whole move. Great hit for all cop movie fans to see. thumbs up for Lethal Weapon 2! If there's an advantage this time out, it's that the film seems to play the action (and its lead character's psychoses) more for laughs. [7 Jul 1989, p.1D] After engaging in a high speed chase with South African smugglers and recovering a trunk full of krugerrands, Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers Martin Riggs (<a href="/name/nm0000154/">Mel Gibson</a>) and Roger Murtaugh (<a href="/name/nm0000418/">Danny Glover</a>) are assigned to the less dangerous job of protecting federal witness Leo Getz (<a href="/name/nm0000582/">Joe Pesci</a>). Soon, however, they learn that Getz is involved in the same smuggling ring, laundering money made by South African diplomats hiding under their diplomatic immunity status. Lethal Weapon 2 is the second movie in the Lethal Weapon series, preceded by <a href="/title/tt0093409/">Lethal Weapon (1987)</a> (1987) and followed by <a href="/title/tt0104714/">Lethal Weapon 3 (1992)</a> (1992) and <a href="/title/tt0122151/">Lethal Weapon 4 (1998)</a> (1998). It is based on a story and screenplay by American screenwriters Shane Black (who created the characters in the first movie), Warren Murphy, and Jeffrey Boam. Krugerrands are a South African monetary unit made mostly of solid gold (with a little copper thrown in). The chief monetary unit of South Africa is called the "rand". "Kruger" comes from the face depicted on the coin of Paul Kruger, president of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900. They aren't anymore. However, during the 1970s and '80s, they were outlawed because of South Africa's position on apartheid. Apartheid is a system of racial segregation in South Africa that limited the rights of black South Africans and kept them "apart" from white South Africans. Apartheid existed in South Africa for decades until it was abolished 1994. In southern Africa, "kaffir" is a ethnic slur referring to a black person. No. The scene requires a serious amount of suspension of disbelief but it really makes for a fun action sequence. Riggs is driving a large, heavy-duty GMC Sierra (a 1989) that likely has a V8 engine and also has a heavy duty rear suspension setup— he uses it to tow the trailer he lives in. However, Riggs wraps the chain he uses to pull out the stilt near the base of the stilt where it's bolted to the concrete post. The bolts, plus the weight of the house on the stilt would make it impossible to yank out with Riggs' truck. In reality, depending on where Riggs had secured the chain to his truck—it looks like it's been attached to the rear axle assembly—the force would have either bent the axle severely or ripped it loose from the undercarriage. It's possible he could have bent the stilt enough if he'd attached the chain about halfway along the length of the support but that would be highly unlikely too, i.e., it would cause some damage to the stilt itself but it's unlikely the whole house would come down. Yes and no. The house that's destroyed in the movie was a replica built on a backlot at Warner Studios. The real house was used as a shooting location but it's still standing at 7436 Mulholland Drive in Beverly Hills. It was designed by a man named John Lautner, who was a famous architect. Trapped in the shipping container loaded with South African drug lord Arjen Rudd's (<a href="/name/nm0000722/">Joss Ackland</a>) Mercedes and shrink-wrapped packages containing hundreds of million of dollars of American money, Riggs and Murtaugh wait until the container is hanging over the Alba Varden. The container doors suddenly burst open and the Mercedes comes flying, exploding into a fireball and followed by thousands of bills, which scatter irretrievably on the water. Riggs and Murtaugh then rappel from the container into the ship's cargo hold. A fight breaks out during which Riggs and Murtaugh manage to take out several of Rudd's henchmen. However, Rudd's hired assassin, Pieter Vorstedt (<a href="/name/nm0640299/">Derrick O'Connor</a>) succeeds in tossing a knife into Riggs' right hamstring, disabling him. Riggs manages to get up on his feet, pulls out the knife, and uses it to stab Vorstedt several times in the gut. When Vorstedt also gets up and pulls a gun on Riggs, Riggs finishes him off by pressing the loading button that releases the overhanging container pod. It falls on Vorstedt, crushing him. When Murtaugh calls out to Riggs to see if he's okay, Rudd open fires on Riggs, pumping several bullets into him. Murtaught turns on Rudd, who is flashing his dipolatic immuity card, but shoots him anyway. "It's just been revoked," he yells out. Murtaugh rushes to his severely-wounded partner and cradles Riggs' seemingly lifeless head in his arms. "You're not dead," Murtaugh entones over and over, "not until I tell you." Riggs replies by asking Murtaugh to reach into his pocket and get his cigarettes. Once Murtaugh has the pack, Riggs tells him to throw them away, saying, "Those things will kill ya!" Riggs then asks whether they've managed to get all the bad guys, and Murtaugh replies, "They've all been de-kaffir-nated."
